The Action of 22 August 1866 occurred during the Chincha Islands War near Funchal, in Madeira.
The Chilean steamer Pampero was captured by the Spanish frigate Gerona, on August 22, 1866 on the island of Madeira when it was brought to Chile, under the command of Juan MacPherson, an English commander in service of the Chilean Navy. The chilean ship had reached Madeira on 21 August to make charcoal and take food and supplements for its crews. The next day, he discovered the spanish frigate Gerona anchoring in the port and leaving all their supplies on the ground, they tried to escape. The Spanish frigate began a persecution that lasted until the night, when after a bullet shot and three other shots without ammunition, the Chilean corvette struck. [1]
The chilean ship subsequently joined the Spanish fleet under the name Tornado.[2]
